IWCF Level 2
Operational Personnel (Non-Supervisory)
Overview
The IWCF Level 2 Drilling Well Control course aims to provide candidates with a sound understanding of the features of drilling a well and the fundamental principles involved in maintaining well control.
This is an introductory course for roles which may directly contribute to well influx creation, detection, or control, with options for surface or combined (surface & subsea) certification.
Upon passing two written assessments, candidates receive an IWCF Level 2 certificate valid for 5 years.

This course is recommended for operational and support personnel whose actions may directly influence well control. Common roles include:
Roughnecks and derrickmen.
Wellsite engineers and geologists.
Wireline, slickline, and coiled tubing crew.
Cementing, pumping, and stimulation crews.
Mud loggers and drilling fluids engineers.
Subsea engineers, wellhead technicians, and equipment maintenance staff.
Personnel whose employer or operator has identified Level 2 as suitable for their role.
What you'll learn
For operations team and well-site support personnel
Covers pressure basics, barriers, kick warning signs, shut-in principles and equipment awareness
Focuses on prevention, detection and reporting
Includes a written assessment only
Does not include a simulator assessment
What to expect
Level 2 training with DSAP is delivered through structured, instructor-led learning designed to make the core principles of well control clear and practical.
The course is delivered in a small-group setting, with guided discussion, worked examples and practical scenarios. The focus is on helping operations team support personnel understand their role in monitoring, observing, detecting and reporting potential well control issues.
With small class sizes, the training is interactive rather than lecture-heavy, giving candidates the opportunity to ask questions, work through examples and receive individual support throughout the course.
Most of the programme is dedicated to learning, discussion and preparation, with the required IWCF written assessments completed toward the end of the course.
Entry requirements
There are no formal prerequisites for this course. Candidates can enrol directly into Level 2 without holding any prior IWCF certification.
The IWCF Level 1 Well Control Awareness course, available online through the IWCF website, can be a useful introduction for those new to the industry, but it is not required before attending Level 2.
Some exposure to drilling operations or wellsite environments is recommended to help candidates get the most from the training.
