IWCF Certification: What it means and why it matters.

In the drilling industry, maintaining control of a well is critical. The International Well Control Forum (IWCF) sets the global benchmark for well control training, ensuring every certified individual has the knowledge and practical skills to prevent and manage well control incidents safely. At Drilling School Asia Pacific (DSAP), we deliver IWCF-accredited training that connects classroom learning with real-world drilling experience. Here’s what you need to know about IWCF certification, how it works, and why it matters for your career.
What is IWCF Certification?

IWCF certification is the industry’s recognised standard for well control competency.
It confirms that candidates have successfully completed accredited training and demonstrated their understanding through written and, where required, simulator-based assessments.

The IWCF framework follows IOGP Report 476, which outlines the recommended training levels for different operational roles, from wellsite crew to company supervisors.

In simple terms, IWCF certification shows that you’re trained to the same global standard as professionals across the oil and gas industry.

Why IWCF Certification Matters

Well control is a non-negotiable part of safe drilling operations. IWCF certification provides:

  • Global recognition — accepted by drilling contractors and operators worldwide.

  • Role-specific training — courses are tailored to your level of responsibility on the rig.

  • Credibility — IWCF certification demonstrates your competence and commitment to safety.

  • Career mobility — certification opens doors to international opportunities and supervisory positions.

At DSAP, our focus is not just on helping you pass — but ensuring you understand the “why” behind every step.

IWCF Course Levels and Validity

IWCF certification is structured across four levels, but only Levels 2, 3, and 4 are delivered through training providers like DSAP.

Level 2 – Wellsite Crew
Designed for rig crew, floorhands, derrickmen, and engineers whose actions can directly impact well control.
Assessed through a written exam only, valid for 5 years.

Level 3 – Driller / Equipment Operator
For drillers, assistant drillers, and toolpushers responsible for carrying out immediate well control actions.
Includes written and simulator assessments, valid for 2 years.

Level 4 – Supervisor / Company Man
For supervisors and company representatives overseeing drilling operations.
Includes written and simulator assessments, valid for 2 years.

All courses can be taken with Surface or Combined Surface & Subsea BOP options, depending on your role and rig type.

How Certification Works
  1. Register for an IWCF Candidate Number
You’ll need this before attending any IWCF course. You can register for an IWCF Candidate Number here.

  2. Complete an IWCF-Accredited Course
Attend training through an approved provider — like DSAP — covering theory, equipment, and simulator practice.

  3. Pass the Required Assessments
Depending on your level, you’ll complete written and/or simulator-based assessments.

  4. Receive Your Certificate
Your IWCF certificate will be issued digitally and linked to your Candidate Registration Number.

  5. Renew Before Expiry
Certificates remain valid for 2 or 5 years depending on the level. Candidates must re-certify before expiry to remain compliant.

IWCF at Drilling School

As an IWCF-accredited provider, we deliver courses that meet the global standard — but we go beyond the textbook.
Our small-class approach means you’ll have direct time with the instructor, plenty of simulator practice, and a low-pressure environment that supports understanding rather than memorisation.

We currently run regular IWCF Level 2, 3 & 4 Drilling Well Control courses in Perth, with the flexibility to bring training to other locations across Asia Pacific when required.
