It depends on whether you support operations, operate equipment, or supervise the well control response.

Quick guide

Level 1: Awareness
For people who need a basic understanding of well control but are not directly involved in operational well control activities.

Level 2: Operations team support
For well-site based personnel who support operations and need to understand well control principles, warning signs and reporting responsibilities.

Level 3: Driller / Equipment Operator
For drillers, assistant drillers and equipment operators responsible for detecting kicks, carrying out shut-in procedures and taking first actions during a well control event.

Level 4: Supervisor
For supervisors responsible for directing the well control response, interpreting shut-in data and ensuring correct actions are carried out.

Level 1: Well Control Awareness

IWCF Level 1 is a free online awareness course provided by IWCF. It is suitable for new industry entrants, students, graduates, ancillary service providers or personnel who need a general understanding of well control.

Level 1 does not qualify candidates for operational well control responsibilities.

Level 2: Operations Team Support

IWCF Level 2 is suited to operations team and support personnel whose actions or inaction could directly influence well control assurance.

It focuses on well control basics, kick warning signs, barriers, prevention, detection and reporting. Level 2 includes written assessment only and does not include a simulator assessment.

Level 2 certification is valid for 5 years.

Level 3: Driller / Equipment Operator

IWCF Level 3 is suited to drillers, assistant drillers and equipment operators who are responsible for detecting kicks and carrying out immediate well control actions.

It includes written theory assessments and a practical simulator assessment in the Driller role.

Level 3 certification is valid for 2 years.

Level 4: Supervisor

IWCF Level 4 is suited to supervisors, toolpushers, company representatives and senior wellsite personnel responsible for overseeing well control operations.

It includes written theory assessments and a practical simulator assessment in the Supervisor role.

Level 4 certification is valid for 2 years.

Level 3 and Level 4 combined training

Level 3 and Level 4 are delivered together as a combined programme. Core classroom learning is shared, while simulator exercises and assessments are completed separately according to each candidate’s certification level.

Level 3 candidates are assessed in the Driller role. Level 4 candidates are assessed in the Supervisor role.
